Trouble at Reed's Market
An act of criminal mischief taking place last Friday night or Saturday morning at Reed's Market in the village of Genesee is being probed by state police from Denton Hill.
Vandals broke the locks on two soft drink machines and tried unsuccessfully to drill through the front of each. The investigation continues.
Between September and October, four more incidents of bad checks have been reported by Reed's. Checks totalling over $170 were bounced by Sean T. Porcuri of Genesee (Sept. 23), Margaret A. Middaugh of Andover, N.Y. (Oct. 20) and Kimberly L. Sheets of Wellsville, N.Y. (Oct. 20) for insufficient funds. Christina Sanford of Buffalo N.Y. bounced a check at Reed's totalling over $800 on Oct. 26 due to a closed account.
Equipment stolen
Theft of equipment from a truck owned by a Potter County resident remains under investigation by state police.
Troopers said that between mid-November and early this month, thieves made off with a 7500-watt red and black generator, a 200-amp black battery charger, two drum assemblies and a brake assembly from a 1977 GMC Astro belonging to Richard Nelson.
The truck was parked at Nelson's home along Rose Lake Road in Allegany Township.
Checks stolen
Someone made off with checks and cash from a woman's purse in an Ellisburg home last Friday afternoon.
According to officers, thieves entered the home of Wanda Wight between 12:45 and 3:15 and took three signed SSI checks amounting to more than $1,200. They also took about $480 in currency and a small sum in coins, as well as an unknown amount of blank checks in Wight's name issued by Steuben Trust Company. Total amount stolen was estimated at $1,725.
DUI
Shane A. Bailey of Coudersport was stopped on Dec. 17 along Route 244 for a traffic violation when it was discovered that he was DUI. Charges were filed though district court.
Camp vandalized
Sometime between Nov. 28, 2007 and Jan. 8, 2008, an unknown person broke into a Stewardson Township camp owned by Majorie Mathews of West Mifflin, Pa. The vandal gained entry by smashing a window and forcing the front door open. Damages were estimated at $150.
PFA violation
On Jan. 4 Wade D. Wilkinson of Boyertown, Pa. was arrested for violating a court-ordered protection from abuse agreement. Dana A. Reid of Ulysses was allegedly victimized when Wilkinson contacted her through use of a landline telephone over the course of three days. Wilkinson is prohibited from having any contact with Reid, either directly or indirectly. Investigation is continuing.
Stolen license plate
State police are seeking information about the theft of a license plate last week from a vehicle parked on Peet Brook Road, north of Coudersport.
Sometime between 8 am Tuesday and 11 am Friday, the Pennsylvania plate YSF2170 was taken from a vehicle owned by John L. Cook.
Identity theft
State police are probing a case of identity theft victimizing a Shinglehouse woman. Sometime in late November, thieves obtained the checking account number belonging to 89-year-old Fae Beam and used it to order $99 worth of magazines.
