Local Red Cross seeks 'Heroes'

For more than 10 years, the Elk-Cameron Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross has helped thousands of people through disaster assistance, service to military families and training in first aid and CPR.

Now, the chapter is reaching out to the community for support through its "Heroes for the American Red Cross" campaign. A kickoff event is slated for 6:30 Monday night at the chapter headquarters at 808 South Michael Road in St. Marys.

"Heroes" is a grassroots campaign in which local business people, school groups, church groups, civic clubs, and individuals pledge to raise $1,000. Fund-raising goal in the two counties is $38,000.

Community support is necessary to keep the vital services of the Red Cross strong in Elk and Cameron counties. Funds will be used for disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid and CPR training and disaster preparedness.

All of the money will stay in the two counties.

Other components of the Heroes campaign will be introduced between now and the end of March.

An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. American Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.

Additional information on the Heroes campaign is available by calling 834-2915.
