Raider wrestlers return to the mat after 'quarantine' Cameron County's varsity wrestling team returned to action this week after a long layoff due to the "mat herpes" quarantine. None of the Red Raiders was affected by the ailment, but the long period of inactivity was a source of frustration. Randy Schatz, Taylor Songer, Mike Baker and Marcus Mullens each scored wins in the Raiders' 51-27 loss at Port Allegany (13-3). Schatz (12-2) took an 11-5 decision at 145. Songer (10-6) came out on fire and dropped Andy Eaton in just 36 seconds at 152. Baker (14-3) followed at 160 with a pin. Then Mullens (10-3) had his way at 171, recording the pin at 1:22. Heavyweight Matt Burke (8-7) got a forfeit win. Port Allegany's Nick Nichols (36-0) moved within one win of becoming the PIAA District 9 all-time leader as he pinned Tyler Bidwell (10-9) at 130. Also competing for Cameron County were Brandon Davies 119), Dom Manginell (125), Bryce Frey (135), Matt Bailey 140) and Matt Melott (189). On Wednesday, Cameron County rolled over Sheffield, 60-12. Schatz scored a pin in 3:20 at 145. Baker took a 10-4 decision at 160. Burke improved to 8-7 with a pin in just 17 seconds. Manginell scored an 8-3 decision at 125 to improve to 10-8. Bidwell scored a late fall at 130. Bailey pinned his 140-lb. foe in 3:42 and Melott had a fall at 215 in 1:21. Frey (135), Hunter Bardo 171) and Mullens (189) won by forfeit. Cameron County returns to action on Saturday at the Bucktail Tournament. Next Friday night, the Red Raiders compete at Coudersport, then board the bus for the long trip to Saturday's Central Erie Tournament, recent addition to the schedule. |
