Coudersport has been fortunate enough to draw a couple of familiar opponents in the opening rounds of the PIAA District 9 girls' basketball playoffs.
With four regulars fighting illness or injury, the Falcons have been pitted against teams that they've already easily handled this season. On Thursday night, they took care of the visiting Port Allegany Gators, 53-36.
Coudersport (23-2) now meets Smethport on the Falcons' home floor Saturday, hoping to earn a berth in the D9 final four next week and move on to another district title game.
"We're hoping that, by next week, we'll be in much better shape," Coudersport coach Brian Green said. "It has been a rough week."
On Thursday, Kristy Kamper (13), Jessica Wilson (13), Jordan Bright (10) and Kelly McVay (9) led the scoring. Kamper had 10 assists and seven steals. Kayla Bohn handed out seven assists.
The Gators took advantage of a Falcon slump after halftime to pull to within 10 points, but never seriously threatened.
"Our defense played well," Green said. "I have to give Port Allegany lots of credit. They really played hard and made us earn it."
