About 100 miles in the Elk State Forest has been opened for snowmobiling, with the Bureau of Forestry smoothing out the trails with equipment such as this groomer. Area snowmobilers have been disappointed with weather conditions this winter. District forester Jeanne Wambaugh at the Emporium office reports that limited grooming has been possible. Generally, she said, the groomer is operated when there is sufficient snow to pack, usually a minimum of five inches. She added that the Forestry Bureau will groom trails seven days a week when conditions allow. For updated information on riding conditions, snowmobilers may call a toll-free number, 1-877-766-6253.
