NUMBERS IN THE NEWS 118,000 How do area school superintendents stack up when it comes to salaries? They're well below the statewide average of $118,000. Clyde D. Moate, newly appointed Superintendent of Schools for Cameron County, recieves $98,000 per year. Coudersport's George Nuffer, who's retiring at end of the current school year, gets $86,000. Matt Hutcheson, Austin, is paid $86,000, rising to $99,500 in 2012. Paul G. Vallas of the Philadelphia City School District receives the highest salary of all Pennsylvania superintendents, at $250,660. The lowest-paid superintendent is Gary W. Davis of the Apollo-Ridge School District in Armstrong County, with a salary of $58,500. Factors affecting a superintendent's salary include years of experience, education and the different pay scales established by each individual district. 111 Pennsylvania leads the nation in all-terrain vehicle deaths. There were 111 ATV fatalities in the state between 2000 and 2006. About 28 percent of those killed were 15 or younger. There are more than 237,000 registered ATV owners in Pennsylvania. 6 Because the lunar cycle delivers Easter early this year - on March 23 - the National Confectioners Association is forecasting a six-percent decrease in Easter candy sales.
