There's now a huge void in Coudersport's downtown. Despite pleas from customers and community leaders, as well as pressure from politicians, corporate leaders of the JCPenney Corporation followed through on their plans to shut down their store on North Main Street. Building owner John Wright confirmed that he offered to negotiate lower rent with corporate leaders, to no avail. He has been in discussions with potential occupants, including the Peebles merchandising chain, but has not secured any tenants. A JCPenney catalogue service has been opened up Main Street at the Always in Bloom business, across from the courthouse.
