Austin girls eliminated, 65-48 Austin's girls made things interesting against the vaunted Mount Alvernia Lions before falling, 65-48, in the first round of the state girls' basketball playoffs Saturday afternoon at Greensburg. Senior Rayna Valenti swished five three-pointers and finished with 24 points to help the Panthers (16-13) push the heavily favored Lions. Mount Alvernia led by just eight, 30-22, entering the third quarter. Austin made another run and cut the gap back to eight early in the fourth quarter before the Lions pulled away. Valenti finished her career with 1,213 points, making her the fifth all-time leading scorer in Austin history. Whitney Crosby added seven points, while Casey Boucher scored six. Mount Alvernia did much of its scoring at the foul line, sinking 19 of 24 attempts and outscoring Austin 19-6 from the stripe. |
