WEST STREET MEDIANS SURVIVE Coudersport Borough Council is feeling the heat for deciding last month to remove the medians on North West Street. Citizen outrage has prompted borough officials to re-think the plan and Council could be poised to rescind the action in the near future. Coudersport Borough Manager Marlin Moore said that the issue is "on hold," pending further deliberation. The 20-year-old "islands" built in the former Coudersport & Port Allegany Railroad rightof way divide the two lanes of West Street. Tulips are planted at both ends on each median and flowering trees spaced along each strip are surrounded by turf and landscaping. Some Borough Council members considered the structures to be an impediment to street maintenance duties, creating lanes that could be too narrow for some firefighting apparatus and requiring mowing and groundskeeping. Moore said borough officials have heard from numerous residents in support of the medians since the news of Council's February discussions began to spread. |
