A YOUNG MAN'S ART
By Alex William Davis
(Alex Davis used to pen 'A Y oung Art' last year for the Endeavor. He's back again, this time telling the tale of college and journalism).
My first semester at college was a learning experience, to say the least.
Like most incoming freshmen, I had the expected nervousness and apprehension. Having prepared myself for the stress, I was pleasantly surprised at the friendliness of the professors, students and faculty.
Fortunately, the adjustment period at Pitt-Bradford has been eased by an almost seamless transition of my life's true passion: journalism.
There was an opening at the campus newspaper, The Source, and within a matter of weeks I was chosen to be the managing editor.
In case you need any more evidence about my love for the work, just look at how I am spending Spring Break. While many students are cavorting in the sunny south, parading their excesses on MTV, here I am as an interim reporter and layout artist for Endeavor News.
In fact, I have been practically immersed in journalism since the age of 15. I just can't get enough of it. No matter what I do or where I turn, the news instinct seems to click in. It's like I have been branded for life.
I've been fortunate to land a part-time job at the Pitt-Bradford Communications and Marketing office, where I write news releases for two kindred spirits. Yes, I work with two former newspaper editors.
One of my goals is to revive the campus chapter of the Society for Collegiate Journalists, which was formed in 1999 but became dormant.
As you might expect, college life is filled with temptations and examples of irresponsible behavior. In that setting, I am especially thankful for the passion that God has given me for a profession that I believe can serve others while delivering its own special satisfaction.
It occupies my time; it keeps me focused.
Good things continue to happen. I've made the dean's list and am learning so many things that will help me in life and in my chosen field.
I am so very grateful. Every day, I bear in mind Colossians 3:17: "Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father."
That's the plan from here on out.
