McKean County Historical Society is recognizing the 75th anniversary of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal this year.

A display in the feature room of the society's museum in Smethport will spotlight the impact of Roosevelt's programs on McKean County.

Society directors announced the recent receipt of a $10,000 grant from the Pa. Historical and Museum Commission to operate the group's museum at the former county jail.

During the Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered the deportation of all illegal aliens in order to make jobs available to American citizens.

Then, in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower deported about 1.3 million Mexican nationals under "Operation Wetback" so that World War II and Korean War veterans had a better chance at landing jobs.

Today, "wetback" is considered a derogatory term for a person that has immigrated illegally to the United States. Commonly referring to Mexicans, the term is based on the presumption that the person in question swam or waded across the Rio Grande to get into the United States, getting his or her back wet in the process.

Two unrelated Middletown, Ohio, women turned 104 just three days apart.

Marjorie Hunt celebrated her big birthday at the retirement community where she lives. She is a "reverse snowbird" who had lived in Florida for 30 years before coming back to Ohio.

Hazel Carter marked her 104th birthday at an assisted living home. She once taught in a one-room schoolhouse, served in the Army during World War II, and worked as an executive secretary for more than 40 years before retiring when she was 65.

There's no stopping vanilla when it comes to Americans' preferences for ice cream. Plain vanilla pulled away by another percentage point in 2007 and is now favored by 29 percent of ice cream eaters. Chocolate has held its own at a distant second, with just nine percent.

Butter pecan and a falling strawberry are now tied for third at 5.3 percent, with neopolitan following at 4.2.

Rounding out the top 10 are chocolate chip, French vanilla, the up and coming cookies and cream, vanilla fudge ripple and praline pecan.

Cherry has fallen to number 11, tied with chocolate almond and coffee with 1.6 percent. Then it's rocky road and chocolate marshmallow. No other flavor registers more than one percent.
