National Day Of Prayer

(Brian Toon is vice chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force).

May 1 is National Day of Prayer. Coordinators are needed in many counties and communities. Would you consider helping?

Even in this age of unprecedented prosperity, America needs your prayers more than ever.

Homicide and incarceration rates in the U.S. are the highest of any industrialized nation; 10 times that of Japan, Sweden, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Juvenile crime is up 920 percent since 1985, the highest in the world.

Divorce has quadrupled in the last 30 years, making the U.S. the world leader.

The U.S. is also the voluntary abortion leader in the world, illegal drug use leader of the world, while ranking high in illiteracy and teen suicides.

It's the mission of our National Day of Prayer Task Force to communicate the need for personal repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the seven centers of power: church, education, family, government, military, business and media.

This country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. National Day of Prayer is held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress, and signed into law by President Truman.

This year our theme is "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield."

God often uses his people to work his will. We need to pray for God's guidance, that his will be done and that our leaders would honor and model righteousness in their words and actions.

Prayer can change hearts and minds. As Christians living in a democracy, it is not only our civic duty to vote, but also our Christian duty. It is our responsibility to ensure that our country continues to uphold Christian principles.
