Leek season has officially begun

Trout season may be another week away, but you can still get out and enjoy the warming weather this weekend in the great outdoors.

Leek season has begun.

Last weekend, in most places, the odiferous wild onions were an inch out of the ground. When the leeks are still this small, digging leeks is a lot more like hunting leeks because without the greens sticking up, it's a guessing game as to where they are. You have to pull the leaves back to find the tiny white shoots.

This "mess" came from the top of the Prouty in Potter County.

They were enjoyed with ham and cheese sandwiches and the new Straub Extra Dark beer, made in St. Marys.

Is there a better way to welcome spring in Pennsylvania?

Good luck digging.
