PLANS SHAPING UP F0R 150TH GALA Things are shaping up for Cameron County's sesquicentennial celebration in 2010. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce executive director Tina Johns Lorson says many ideas are in the works, but she welcomes more suggestions. A meeting on celebration is set for 7 pm Monday, May 5, at the courthouse. The public is welcome. Lorson attended Wednesday night's Cameron County Historical Society dinner to put out a call for people to help celebrate the 150th anniversary of the county's founding. "This is a big deal," Lorson said. "It's a way to give the county more recognition." One idea includes designating historical houses, modeled after a similar program in Smethport. A bronze plaque would be placed outside the house designating it as an entry on the Emporium History Registry and citing the date it was built. Inside each house would be a record of the structure's history. Local historian and Chamber director Mike Wennin envisions a house tour route. Other plans include depicting places and figures on banner, collectible playing cards with local historic themes, a booklet, creation of a logo for the sesquicentennial celebration and community events spread out over several months. "The goal is to have something going on the whole year," Lorson said. She encourages anyone with suggestions or comments to call her at 486-4314. |
