Rotary shares legacy with youth
One of the most important foundations of the Rotary International organization, the "Four-Way Test," was shared with teenagers in the Emporium area recently through a competition.
Emporium Rotary Club hosted a speech contest based on the organization's measurement of judgments adults are often called upon to make: is it the truth?; is it fair to all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships?; and, will it be beneficial to all concerned?
All students in grades nine through 12 at Cameron County High School were eligible to enter. They were asked to devise a speech based on ways the Four-Way Test can be applied to everyday life.
It was adopted by Rotary International in 1943 and has been translated into more than 100 languages.
Students were judged on content, organization, delivery of speeches between five and seven minutes long.
Winner in Cameron County was sophomore Ashley Milliron (right), who tied in the Four-Way Test with suicide awareness. Freshman Victoria Foutz was runner-up for her speech on the extinction of wolves.
Rotarians expressed their appreciation to Principal Patty Schwer and faculty members Marilyn Deppen and Nancy Kuhn for their support.
