Falcons knock Hubbers from undefeated ranks

Coudersport's girls made a statement in a high school softball game against visiting Smethport Tuesday afternoon.

Coach Scott Andrews' Falcons (10-3), who have taken their lumps over the years, outlasted the previously undefeated Smethport Hubbers, 2-1, in a 10-inning nailbiter.

Maureen McCusker smacked a single that drove in Megan Hau with the game-winner. Hau had boarded on an error.

Winning pitcher Karli Duffee was locked on a dual with Hubber star Emma Hahn, who recorded 23 strikeouts. Duffee had the last laugh, limited the potent Smethport bats to just three hits and three walks while fanning seven.

With the game netted 1-1 in the top of the tenth, the Hubbers placed runners at second and third but Coudersport flashed solid glove work and Duffee closed things out with a strikeout.

McCusker and Tori Brown each had two hits for the Falcons. Hau had a triple and scored both Coudersport runs. Kelly McVay and Duffee had the other hits.

Last Friday, Coudersport weathered the storm against a determined hitting attack to turn back Port Allegany, 8-3.

Hau and Korianne McManus split pitching duties for the Falcons and did not issue a walk.

Coudersport is back in action Monday at Kane as the team prepares for the upcoming PIAA District 9 playoffs.
