WORK TO GET UNDER WAY AT EMPORIUM SENIOR CENTER
Cameron County Commissioners last week awarded the contract to Solveson Contracting of Emporium for $15,843. Work is expected to start June 1. Solveson will install new steps, build a roof over the steps and one of the center's ramps, as well as upgrade the bathroom and electrical system. A $5,000 state grant is helping to cover the project's cost. Senior center activities are open to everyone age 60 and up. The center is a cornerstone of the community, for both social gathering and programs of interest to seniors. Among the center's services and activities are congregate breakfasts and lunches, homedelivered meals served to about 25 seniors, bingo, card games, medical check-ups, exercise programs, and Internet access. An average of 30 senior citizens spend time each day at the center. President Kenny Ostrum said the center recently added a large-screen TV for informational programs, as well as a new video game system with a sports package that will promote exercise through virtual bowling, tennis and golf. Donations are being sought for the video game package. The center is staffed by volunteers who prepare meals and take care of administrative tasks. Operated by the Office of Human Services, the center has been at its current location since around 1975. It's open from 8 am to 3 pm on Mondays through Fridays. For more information, contact the center at 486-3707. |
