Cameron Co. Relay for Life set for June 20-21
Volunteers and other participants are needed for Cameron County's 10th annual Relay for Life, an American Cancer Society fund-raiser set for Friday and Saturday, June 20-June 21. It gets underway at noon at the Cameron County High School athletic facility.

A meeting has been set for 7 pm on Tuesday, June 3, at Memorial Hall for those interested in forming or joining a team.

Just six teams have registered so far, a considerable reduction over past years and a source of concern to the organizers. The event raises money for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Survivors, family members and others circle the track over a period of 24 hours.

"Relay for Life is a funfilled event that mobilizes communities to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer," said American Cancer Society spokesperson Susan Babik.

Some teams have participated ever since the local Relay started: WWJD Trackers from the First United Methodist Church, Northwest Savings Bank, and Josh N Around, comprised of the Hutton family.

More than $500,000 has been raised over the nine years; last year's take was about $42,000.

Babik said she's hopeful more people will step forward down the stretch. She said the fall-off could be attributed in part to a slumping economy.

She can be reached for more details at 1-800-458-3856, ext. 3507.
