'WEEKEND IN THE WILDS' SHAPING UP

Details have yet to be decided, but the Weekend in the Wilds observance will return in Cameron County this summer.

It's an opportunity to pull together local residents and visitors for a good time, in support of community organizations.

Once again, the popular Battle of the Bands at the Cameron County Fairgrounds will be scheduled as part of the celebration. Bands will compete on Aug. 16. Proceeds will benefit the Cameron County SPCA. Other community organizations will be encouraged to set up fundraising booths.

Among the other 'Wilds' events will be a car show, battle of the barrel, best wings contest, and a Friday night old-time rock 'n roll dance at the Emporium Country Club (complete with Elvis impersonator).

The organizers are also trying to piece together a "Taste of Emporium" restaurant showcase as part of the observance.
