The cows are more than eight months pregnant and have split off from the larger herds of 40 to 100 into small groups of four to six. More ... State park programs this weekend Cherry Springs and Lyman Run state parks welcome visitors over the Memorial Day weekend. At 7:00 p.m. Saturday, a program entitled "Discover the Sun" will allow Cherry Springs visitors to view the sun safely through a solar telescope. More ... Kayaking program Saturday A program on kayaking has been set from 1 pm to 2:30 pm Saturday at Sinnemahoning State Park. It'll show basics, such as types, techniques and safety tips, at the boat launch area of the park. Boaters will also have a chance to kayak near the George B Stevenson Dam. More ... Pontoons rides Sunday, Monday Pontoon boat excursions will be held Sunday and Monday at Sinnemahoning State Park. The 45-minute tour explores the George B Stevenson Dam, wetlands and wildlife, especially bald eagles. More ...

Sizerville pool now open Sizerville State Park's pool is now open on weekends and Memorial Day, from 11 am to 7 pm. Weekday hours will be 4 pm to 7 pm daily until June 7, when summer pool hours of 11 am to 7 pm will begin. Drum & Henry derby to mark 54 years June 1 Plans are in place for the annual Drum and Henry Fishing Derby, to be held on Sunday, June 1, at the Bucktail Rod and Gun Club. It's a success story that dates back more than a half-century. Funds come through donations from local businesses, as well as a gift from the Emporium Foundation. More ... Elk apps being taken Hunters may now apply for the drawing that will distribute 45 elk-hunting licenses for the Nov. 3-8 season. Winners will be chosen on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Pennsylvania Elk Expo. Some 17 antlered and 28 antlerless licenses will be awarded. More ... Fishing derbies this weekend A Kids' Fishing Derby is scheduled for Saturday at Brooks Run, north of George B. Stevenson Dam off Rt. 872.
