More than 60 Cameron County High School students recently got a hands-on experience while learning about the military.

Thirty-seven miniature airplanes, jets, boats, tanks and other vehicles were showcased in the high school cafeteria during the 16th annual Military Model Show.

"Many of the models were very well done," said history teacher Tom Glosek. "A lot of them were unique."

Dozens of community members turned out to view the models. It's the first time the show coincided with the Memorial Day holiday observance, Glosek pointed out.

"I just want these kids to appreciate those who

served," he said.

High school juniors crafted the masterpieces during the last six weeks.

Student Meredith Caldwell displayed pictures of her military ancestor, U.S. Air Force Major Thomas Clark.

Clark, a standout student and athlete at Cameron County High School, died when his aircraft was shot down in Laos in 1969. His body was never recovered.

Students were permitted to build models from the Civil War, World War II, Vietnam and current military activities.

The tradition began after Glosek and former wood shop teacher Junior Murray wanted to get students more involved in history.

About a dozen local military veterans cast their votes for their favorite models.

Winners were: first place, German U-boat, Miranda Schalles and Heather Logue; second place, Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Dan Sullivan and Don Catalone; and third place, A-10 Warthog diorama with jeep, Matt Anthony and Randy Schatz. Emporium Foundation gave these students cash prizes. Items from local businesses were given as gifts to the all other students. Glosek was assisted by history teacher Aaron Bowes and science teacher William Faulk.
