REMEMBERING THE FALLEN SOLIDERS
EMPORIUM: FATHER OF MARINE URGES VIGILANCE
By Alex Davis Endeavor News

Elementary Principal Lynn Newcomer remembers that solemn phone call he received from Iraq in March 2007. Right off, he knew it was bad news.

His son, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Derek Newcomer, was on the line. The horrors of warfare hit close to home as the younger Newcomer shared the news that one of his comrades had been killed by an improvised explosive device, the same day Derek was preparing to return to the U.S.

Newcomer shared his perspective as the father of a serviceman deployed to a war zone in his Memorial Day address at Emporium's Big Flag Memorial.

While thankful that his son returned home safely, Newcomer said all U.S. citizens are duty-bound to support those who are in harm's way while serving the country's all-volunteer military.

He asked citizens to pray for the family and friends of the war casualties as well as national leaders.

One of the highlights of Monday's ceremony was the recognition of a three-generation military family, Lyle Lyon, Paul Lyon and Scott Lyon.
