Through An 'Old Timer's' Eyes
By Howard 'Mac' McDonald

Like most of the people in our neck of the woods, we planted flowers all weekend long. The next planting frenzy will be in the vegetable garden.

Like everything else, flowers and vegetable plants are really up in price. It seems like the rising cost of gasoline has caused every thing to take a jump.

Where are all these alternative fuels we were promised? I believe the oil companies are keeping them under wraps. They have a lot of sway with their multi-billion dollar record profits.

A Wall Street Journal article pointed how the military has become an alternative fuel pioneer. In March the Air Force flew a B-1 Stealth bomber across the sprawling White Sands Proving Ground to show that a plane could break the sound barrier using synthetic jet fuel.

South African airliners have been using synthetic fuels for years but never in a jet that goes so fast. I have always said that if they can make synthetic oil, why couldn't they make a synthetic fuel?

To help with the fuel problem, I believe they should make all the breweries, distilleries and wineries stop making their products for one week a month and produce just alcohol. Alcohol is a good fuel and most auto engines will run on it.

One day when this lady was trying to get her husband to quit drinking, she dropped a fishing worm into a glass of whiskey. The worm curled up and died.

"Do you see that, and do you know what that proves?" she asked him.

His answer was, "Sure, I know what that proves. If you drink whiskey, you won't get worms."

That evening she loaded him in the car and drove by the Jack Daniel's distillery. It was about 10 pm and she said, "See there, they're making it faster than you can drink it."

He replied, "Yes, but I have them working overtime."

I see where California has passed a law allowing samesex marriages.

There will be more gays headed there now than went there in 1849 when they discovered gold.

On Saturday, the Moose held a fishing derby up at the Clear Creek Lake. Everyone had a good time and the Moose Club should be commended for its contribution to the community and our kids.

I believe that there is not enough credit given to this organization that sponsors Moose Haven. Keep up the good work.

I hope your Memorial Day weekend was as pleasant as mine. Bright sunshine and a brisk wind accompanied the people who marched and drove in the Memorial Day parade. The VFW Honor Guard stepped smartly by as the flags along the street snapped and popped in the wind.

The shiny firetruck and other vehicles moved along the parade route in quick time and they all ended up at the Big Flag Memorial at the west end of town.

Lynn Newcomer delivered the speech that paid tribute to our fallen comrades.

Now, our summer activities begin. After such a tough winter, I believe everyone is looking forward to those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Picnics, cookouts and baseball will take up a lot of the folks' time. I don't know about, you but I am ready for it.
