International recognition for Cherry Springs

A hot spot for star gazers and astronomers, Cherry Springs State Park has received world recognition for preserving the night sky.

The park this week was cited by the International Dark Sky Association for its commitment to dark sky protection and restoration on public lands.

It is part of the state-sponsored "dark sky" initiative, limiting the amount of light shone skyward. Some areas at Cherry Springs aren't illuminated at all in an effort to protect owls, bats, and a host of indigenous mammals and help people catch a more complete look at the sky.

Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources has designated Cherry Springs as a Dark Sky Preserve.

Since 2002, the park has hosted stargazing programs. A year later, the park was fitted with telescope pads, observatories for rent, and educational materials.

"This designation is continued validation that this region has something special to offer to visitors," said DCNR Secretary Michael DiBerardinis. "We are proud of what we have protected, and hope our visitors will enjoy the remoteness of the Pennsylvania Wilds and Cherry Springs State Park for many years to come."
