Emporium teen dies in ATV crash

An Emporium teenager was killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash last Saturday in Shippen Township. Police identified the victim as 19-year-old Clifford E. Akins.

Troopers report that Akins lost control of the four-wheeler while traveling at a high rate of speed on May Hollow Road, less than one mile west of Sterling Run Road, at about 3 pm.

The ATV veered off the road while rounding a left-hand curve, traveled down an embankment and ran into a tree.

Cameron County Coroner Ted Walters pronounced Akins dead at the scene. Police said the victim was wearing a helmet.

Akins was a 2007 graduate of Cameron County High School.

Members of the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department and Emporium Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
