AUSTIN SCHOOL BATTLING TOBACCO Austin Area School is not only battling student tobacco use, but also offering help to those young people are developing addictions to nicotine. At their final business meeting of the 2008-09 school year, school board members adopted a policy that will take effect as students return to classes in the fall. A ban on student possession or use of tobacco products on school property or during school-sponsored activities elsewhere remains in effect. Under the new policy, first-time offenders will be referred for the Smoking Cessation Program, sponsored by Drug and Alcohol Services. In addition, the student will be suspended from school for one day and, with a parent, will be required to meet with the school administration. In the event of a second offense, an administrative conference will be required, as well as a two-day suspension and a $50 fine. A third offense brings a conference, $50 fine, three-day suspension and referral to the Austin Area Board of Education for additional sanctions. |
