'Survivor: Cameron County' being planned for Cameron County fair
Potter County's Wanda Shirk, who appeared on the CBS-TV hit series "Survivor," will host a local version of the reality show at 6 pm Friday, Aug. 8. "Survivor: Cameron County will challenge local people in a fun, competitive game with a twist," said co-organizer Wendy Davis. Two teams of 10 will go head-to-head, testing endurance, problem-solving, risktaking and relying on their own resources and sometimes, each other. One by one, contestants will be voted out. Eight tribal council members will cast their vote for the champion and runner up. Both will be awarded cash prizes. Applications will soon be available. Competition is open to those 16 or older and fee is $5.00. Local businesses and organizations may also sponsor the event. For more information, email ccfair@gmail. com or blankccfair@gmail. com or call 486-2191. Also in the works for this year's fair is an appearance by Punxsutawney Phil on Wednesday, Aug. 6, during Community Night. Handlers will bring the famous groundhog from Punxsutawney and showcase him in a big glass case. Local organizations are also hosting various activities that night. Among those are a pet show by the Cameron County SPCA; a craft fair by the Cameron County Family Center; face panting by the Elk and Cameron Red Cross; 50-50 raffle chances and poppy sale by Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary; youth golf clinic hosted by the Emporium Country Club; helping children make hard cover books for journaling or drawing by the Cameron County Genealogy Club; and information stations by the Pa. Game Commission and the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission. A parade through downtown Emporium to the fairgrounds will be held on Monday, Aug. 4, and will kick off this year's festivities. Cameron County Fair Association invites residents and others to ride lawn and farm tractors, floats or march through the parade. Already signed up are the Cameron County High School band and band front and Emporium Volunteer Fire Department. That night, cowboy Larry Zwickel will perform a Wild, Wild West Show showing off with bullwhips, guns and ropes. Other highlights that week will include a performance by Trixx Rock 'n Roll Band on Monday from 8 to 10 pm, and A Mime to Amaze on Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm.
