Garbage rates rising in Emporium Emporium Borough residents would pay more for garbage pickup and disposal under a measure that was tentatively approved by Borough Council this week. Council members voted to advertise their intent to raise sanitation rates to $15 per month, up from the current $13.34. It would be the first increase in six years. Emporium Borough Manager Don Reed projects that the higher rate would generate an additional $18,000 to help the borough cover rising collection and disposal costs. Wayward bears will have fewer choices when it comes to foraging for food in the borough. Complaints from business owners and residents prompted Council to purchase a bear-proof dumpster, at a cost of $595. A metal lid will prevent animals from accessing its contents food. Residents have recently reported bear sightings in the vicinity of Charlie's Friendly Tavern on East Allegany Avenue and Olivett's Shurfine Foodmart on Third Street. The dumpster will be available for use by businesses and residents by contacting the borough office. |
