NEAT NUMERALS 13 Americans have never been so mobile. If past trends hold true, some 13 percent of residents will move sometime in 2008. Top reason for a move is for a larger home. Second is improved economics/upgrade, followed by job transfer and personal relationships. 73 State environmental officials recently completed a study in McKean County that found some 73 illegal dumps, containing an estimated 165 tons of trash disposed of in an environmentally irresponsible manner. To date, 25 Pennsylvania counties have been surveyed, identifying more than 2,600 illegal dumps. State officials expect to survey all 67 Pennsylvania counties by the year 2012. 1.16M Coudersport-based Zito Media has agreed to invest $1.16 million in a fiber-optic network to service McKean County. Last week, Bradford City Council approved a $200,000 loan to Zito in support of the project. McKean County leaders see the availability of high-tech communications as a key element in economic development. While the network is geared toward high-volume business users, it will also be available for residential use. Zito Media hopes to expand the fiber rings into Potter and other northcentral Pennsylvania counties. 1,400 A landowner's plan to open a landfill on a 1,400-acre parcel in Elk County faces numerous hurdles. Mike Buhler has approached state and county officials with his plan for property in Horton Township near the Johnson Run/Oyster Run area. The landfill would need to meet state environmental laws, as well as the provisions of a township "quality of life ordinance" adopted in 1991 when a company sought to open a landfill. |
