Potter County: 'Hotbed'

Potter County is fast becoming a hotbed of oil and gas exploration, with a flood of production witnessed in June and more on the horizon.

DEP issued 91 permits for exploration in the county from January through June, including 37 in May and June. Breakdown is 60 for oil, 21 for natural gas, and 10 for oil and gas combined.

DEP reports that production began in earnest last month. From January through May, six wells were put into production in Roulette, Clara, Bingham and Allegany townships.

However, since June 1, at least 10 more wells have begun producing, including four each in Clara and Ulysses townships and one each in Hector and Bingham townships.

This month's statistics will be available by early August.
