Local men helping battle fires in California
Coudersport resident Joe Kellert, an Elk State Forest District assistant district forester, was dispatched last Friday to the Basin Complex, an area where fire has scorched 99,021 acres. He'll remain there for two weeks. Meanwhile, John Wambaugh of Austin has been sent to the Ukonom Complex fire two weeks ago. More than 350 people are fighting to put out those flames that burned 11,037 acres. Officials say a lightning strike caused both fires. Residents were forced to evacuate last Saturday from the Lower Cachagua near Basin Complex, while some 25 residents and a telecommunications radio facility near the Ukonom Complex remain threatened. Other local firefighters assisting at the Basin Complex are Mike Simon of Renovo, Joe Newel and Rob Ference of St. Marys, Brendan Wilson of Kersey and Bill Maiers of Johnsonburg. Doug DAmore of Renovo is helping at the Ukonom Complex. |
