'Rails-to-trails' project may start next year Portions of an abandoned railroad grade leading from Emporium to St. Marys could be converted into a recreational trail as early as next year. That 19-mile right-of-way from the caboose at the east end of Emporium to a point near the St. Marys golf course is being targeted as a "Rails-to-Trails" project. West Creek Recreational Trail Association hopes to close a deal to acquire the 19-mile strip of land from Allegheny & Eastern Railroad in September. "It's going to be an ongoing process," said spokesman Cliff Clark of the Cameron County Industrial Development Authority. "This project is going to take time." A half-dozen local leaders have been pushing for development of the trail since 2003, hoping that it would attract tourists while providing local residents a convenient site for hiking, bicycling and other outdoor activities. Plans call for gates to be erected to prevent vehicles from accessing the trail. A $15,000 Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources grant will fund a feasibility study, while other funds are coming from the Cameron County Industrial Development Authority and the City of St. Marys. |
