Joseph Olivett

Joseph Olivett, 97, recently a resident of the Grove House in Emporium, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in the Guy and Mary Felt Manor

in Emporium.

Born Aug. 15, 1910 in Emporium, he was the son of Joseph and Teresa Fiordelisi Olivett. In 1942 in Emporium, he married Helen Moyer, who died in 1999.

A lifelong resident of Emporium, Mr. Olivett had attended Emporium High School and was a veteran of WWII having served with the U.S. Army.

For 10 years he was employed at his brother's grocery store, Sam Olivett & Sons at the west end of Emporium. In 1938, he opened his own grocery business at the east end of town, which is where Olivett's Shurfine Foodmart is still located. Mr. Olivett retired from the business in 1982.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emporium and VFW Post No. 6221 in Emporium, and was a life member of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club and the Emporium Country Club. He was also an avid fisherman and loved spending time at his camp in Sizer Run.

Survivors include: two sons, J. Timothy (Jennifer) Olivett, and Richard A. (Mary) Olivett, all of Emporium; one daughter, Jean Olivett of Brooklyn, Maine; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Anthony Olivett and Samuel Olivett and three sisters; Rose Penanes, Mary Livoto and Lillian Riss.

Friends were received in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, on Friday, July 18 from 1 until 3 pm, at which time funeral and committal services were held with the Rev. Russell Horning of Shinglehouse offi ciating. Military honors were accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Burial will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium. Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
