GALETON, GERMANIA BUSY THIS WEEKEND A new cultural event debuts in Galeton on Saturday, followed by the traditional Germania Old Home Day just down the road on Sunday. "Gale Fest," filled with music, art and food, is a tribute to William Gale, the leather tanning tycoon who is recognized as the town's founder. Saturday's events kick off with a five-kilometer run at 7 am. Quilt display at the library opens at 10 am. Firemen's chicken barbecue serving at the John Collins Memorial Park starts at 11. There will be children's programs at the park from noon to 3 pm. At 7 pm, the Emerald Brass Quintet, with Galeton native Brett Long, will entertain during a 90-minute set. After that, the Woodhicks will perform foot-stomping country music. St. Bibiana's Catholic Church will hold Monte Carlo Night from 8-10 pm. Several businesses are also participating in Gale Fest. Lakeview Cinema will present a ventriloquist Saturday at 1 pm, followed by a marionette show at 3. Art shows will be open all day at Suzan Richar Art Studio, Lydia's Unique Country Store and Gallery at 15 West. Heart's Desire on Main Street is hosting an alpaca exhibit, face-painting for kids (10 to noon), a guitar duo from 2-4, and fund-raisers for the Pa. Lumber Museum (compliments of Genesee Natural Foods) and Those Who are Going Without. At the Brick House Deli and Café, artisans Leslie Kelley and Denise Mitcheltree will be operating art and jewelry exhibits.Germania Old Home Day, now in its 33rd year, is on tap for Sunday. There is no admission fee and no charge for parking. Entertainment, food and legal beverages make for a lively gathering. One of the highlights is the drawing for cash prizes totaling more than $35,000. Raffle tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m., with the food and beverage booths opening at 11. A horseshoe pitching contest, starting at 11:45, is open to the public. Cash prize drawings start at 1 p.m. Doug Firestone will set up a lumber camp blacksmith shop from 1 to 4. The NASCAR Nextel Cup race will be shown on the big screen starting at 4:30. Another crowd favorite will be the greased pig chases in women's and children's divisions, starting at 5:30. A deejay will spin tunes for dancing from 7:30 to closing at 11 p.m.
Germania is located along Pa. Rt. 144, about seven miles south of Galeton in Potter County.
