ABORETUM VOLUNTEERS WELCOME WEDNESDAY
      Another ambitious agenda has been prepared for continued development of the Coudersport Arboretum in 2009. Those wishing to pitch in and help with the growth of this unique community memorial park have a chance to join the team on Wednesday night at 5:15 when the volunteer committee meets at the borough office, a restored railroad depot located next to the Arboretum.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TRAIN FOR DISASTER
      Cameron County High School students will undergo extensive training this spring so they will be ready to respond effectively in the event of a disaster. Teen Community Emergency Response Team program is being headed by Adam Johnson, who chairs the Local Emergency Planning Committee Citizens Corps, and member Annie (Hnath) Johnson.

SCHOOL DISTRICT RESTRUCTURES DEBT
      Cameron County School District will save upwards of $210,000 by taking advantage of the current market to restructure debt. School board members last week agreed to borrow $4.56 million in general obligation bonds to pay off a 1998 bond series and reduce interest expenses.

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT PLAN EXPLAINED
      About 30 representatives from local governments in Potter County gathered in Coudersport Wednesday evening for an update on the county's Stormwater Management Plan. By 2011, the plan will result in a county-wide ordinance that will regulate the way stormwater run-off is managed.

GAS WORK IN AREA JUST DAWNING, OFFICIALS BELIEVE
      Northcentral Pennsylvania's gas and oil boom is just dawning, state officials say. In Potter County, there were 171 drilling permits issued by the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) in 2008, compared to just 139 issued for the eight-year span of 2000- 07.

Student geography competition
      Eighth-grader Katrina Neyman emerged as champion of the annual Cameron County High School Geography Bee. Ten finalists from seventh and eighth grades answered questions on U.S. and world geography in the high school auditorium. In its third year, the National Geographic Society event is an attempt to engage students in geography.

      SSgt. David Schumacher graduated from Pararescue and Combat School at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. Schumacher, the son of David and Sally Schumacher and a 1998 graduate of Austin Area High School, joined the Air Force in 2000.

LOCAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATES HIT DOUBLE DIGITS
      Unemployment rates in Cameron and Potter counties continued to hover above the statewide and national averages in November. State officials report that 11.1 percent of Cameron County's adults were actively seeking work. Job cuts have occurred in the powdered metals, automotive components and lumber industries.

'GO GOS DOCUMENTARY SUNDAY
      Almost 40 years after they traded their instruments for day jobs, the members of the Coudersport rock band Ollie and the Go Gos reunited in 2004 as part of a townwide "class reunion." That magical weekend has been captured in a documentary that will air on WPSX-TV, Channel 3 on the cable system in Coudersport, Austin and Emporium, at 11:30 pm Sunday.

"No Wrong Door" is a campaign to make the organization more convenient for those who might be in need of mental health/mental retardation, aging, drug and alcohol abuse, transportation, food/shelter/ rental assistance, or other services.

     The Emporium Senior Center will host a special "Senior Moment" next Saturday (Jan. 31). Champion pizza maker Dave Smith of Pizza Palace Plus will show off his skills from 3 pm to 5 pm. The public is invited to join the pizza party. Dave will demonstrate how to toss dough and make a pizza pie like a pro. There will be lots of pizza to eat and drinks for everyone. Cost is $4 per person.

     Times are tough in the local and national economies, but better days are coming. That was the message of Joseph Kilmer, financial advisor for C&N Financial Services Corp., during a presentation to Emporium Rotary last week. He's shown with program chair Barb Smith. Kilmer summarized Wall Street patterns and economic trends, imploring Rotarians to not lose hope. In other news, members were reminded that tickets for the mid-winter raffle will be drawn at the Wine and Cheese Social on Feb. 28 at O'Connell Hall in Emporium. STINE WANTS PLEA WITHDRAWN, NEW TRIAL
      A former Potter County resident serving a 20- to 40-year state prison term for sexually assaulting two children wants to withdraw his guilty plea and be tried. Jason Stine, 31, filed the petition in Potter County Court.

      "Meet the Local Agencies" will be held at the Johnsonburg Area High School auditorium on Tuesday night from 6:30 to 9. Purpose of the session is to provide information to parents of students with disabilities in Cameron and Elk counties on available agencies and services upon graduation.

      Theft by deception Charges have been filed against two Cameron County juveniles after they allegedly failed to turn in fund-raiser money. Police say the Woodland Elementary School students sold items for the Parent/Teacher Organization but did not hand in the proceeds. The incident occurred between Oct. 1 and Dec. 16.

      Northern Allegany Chapter of Basketball Officials is looking for new officials for the upcoming seasons. Many of the veteran referees are getting up in years and have indicated a desire to step down, but they are concerned that younger people have not joined the chapter.

BROWN SPEAK TO COUDY ROTARY
      Irv "Bud" Brown, one of the longest-serving members of the Coudersport Rotary Club, was guest speaker at this week's meeting. Brown joined Rotary more than 40 years ago and continues as an honorary member. He has held a variety of local and district leadership positions.

      Hemlock Springs Historic Crafts and Cultural Arts Center has been awarded a $1,730 grant from the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts to help cover expenses of the 2009 Woodland Hobbit and Fair Festival. It's scheduled for Saturday, June 13.

BOMB THREAT SUSPECT NABBED
      A Coudersport teenager faces charges for allegedly making a bomb threat at the high school last week. Coudersport Borough Police filed charges against Adam C. MacCready, 18, alleging that he wrote a message in a rest room at the school warning that a bomb was going to explode in the building.
