AUSTIN HONORED AS DISTINGUISED TITLE I SCHOOL
      Austin Area School District was honored recently by the Pa. Dept. of Education (PDE) for its improvements in student scores on standardi zed state testing. Austin was one of about 125 schools statewide named a "Distinguished Title I School," highest honor under the Pa. System of Schools Assessment (PSSA).

COMMISSIONERS OKAY TELECOMMUNICATIONS STUDY, CDBG PROJECT
      Two separate actions which will lead to improvements in technology and infrastructure were approved by the Potter County Commissioners during their Feb. 26 business meeting. An agreement with Zito Media will result in an engineering and feasibility study for construction of a modern telecommunications network which will reach underserved sections of the county.

DST ARRIVE SATURDAY!
      Daylight Saving Time arrives in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday. At 2 am, the time magically becomes 3 am, which gives us an extra hour of daylight in the early evening. As always, emergency management agencies have issued a suggestion that residents use the occasion to check smoke detector batteries and carbon monoxide detectors.

DARK SKY SUPPORTERS WANT YOUR OBSERVATIONS
      As host of one of the nation's few Dark Skies Preserves, Cherry Springs State Park is joining in the celebration of 2009 as "International Year of Astronomy." Maxine Harrison, dark skies director at the park, is encouraging local residents to become involved in an international star-hunting program known as "GLOBE At Night" March 16-28.

BREAST CANCER EXHIBIT COMING THURSDAY
      A traveling photo exhibit recognizing the fight against breast cancer will be set up at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital's Irwin Medical Arts Building March 12- 23. "67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania" will be set up at the Irwin Medical Arts Building. An opening reception is scheduled for 6 pm on Thursday, March 12.

      Dr. Saket Prasad will be the featured speaker at the March 17 meeting of the Man to Man prostate cancer group. This date is a change from the regular second Tuesday of the month meeting schedule.       Scot Setzer A son was born to Brooke Pelchy and Heath Setzer of Austin on Feb. 20, 2009 at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital. Named Scot Nathan Setzer, the boy weighed seven pounds, three ounces and joins one brother, Sage, 7; and three sisters, Shae, 6; Sari, 4; and Skylar, 21 months.

      Several local highway and bridge projects are a "go" for what should be a busy construction season. Meanwhile, a transportation planning committee will convene on Wednesday in Ridgway to further assess how money from the federal economic stimulus legislation will filter down to pay for local projects.

Orlowski, Bacon recognized during AVFD banquet
      Two members of Austin Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance were recognized for their outstanding emergency responses during the agency's annual Corporation Dinner on Sunday. EMT Cheryl Orlowski, who serves as Third Assistant Ambulance Chief, and Mike Bacon, Second Assistant Fire Chief, were presented with plaques by Nate Burgett, First Assistant Ambulance Chief.

ART AUCTION PLANS IN PLACE
      An art auction featuring many types of media will be held on April 4 in Coudersport to benefit the Alzheimer's Association of Pennsylvania. It gets underway at 6 pm with a preview, and the auction starts at 7 pm at the Coudersport Consistory on East Second Street. Cost is $10 per person.

      Austin Area High School Senior Alex Ebbert tackled a community endeavor when he chose his senior project. Alex set a goal to replace the welcome sign along Route 872 on the sourthern end of town. Alex removed parts of the sign that would not work into the design, but refinished and saved most of the original structure.

      33 Millions of newspaper readers across the country have mourned the loss of their local papers over the past several years. Last week, obituaries were posted for the venerable Rocky Mountain News in Denver. Some 33 daily newspapers in the U.S. are fighting for survival through Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Many others are for sale.

'PASSION PLAY' TAKES STAGE MARCH 29
      More than a half-century has passed since the Coudersport Consistory Players and assorted volunteers first took to the stage to perform "The Story of the Crucifixion." This year's performance is set for 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 29, at the consistory auditorium. Tickets, at $3.00, will be available at the door.

      Cameron County has been awarded $13,315 from the federal government under the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. A board made up of the County Assistance Office, Salvation Army, Red Cross, County Commissioners, Food Banks, Northern Tier Community Action Corp.

Northern Tier Mission team returns from Nicaragua
      Northern Tier Mission Team observed its 10th anniversary with a trip to Nicaragua to work on a church addition. Members of Jim Centanni, Terry Simkins and Linda Todd of Coudersport were greeted by the Rev. Doug Orbaker, former pastor of the Coudersport First United Presbyterian Church, as they arrived in San Jose de Masatepe.

Fourteen acts of performers, dancers and musicians took to the stage at Cameron County High School for a talent show to benefit the Cameron County Fair Association scholarship fund and help cover fair expenses.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE TRAINING
      A medical assistant training class begin on April 7 at the Potter County Education Council office in Coudersport. It consists of 500 hours of classroom instruction and laboratory experience, plus a 220-hour clinical internship.

      A movie depicting three generations of women brought together by a single birth will be shown Sunday at the Coudersport Public Library as part of International Women's Day. "Singing The Bones" will be shown at 2 pm. Doors open at 1 and refreshments will be served.

ROUTE 6 CLEAN-UP EXPANDS
      Pa. Rt. 6 Heritage Corp. is seeking volunteers for the Great American Clean-Up, to be held April 24-26. Last year, 250 volunteers picked up litter along 103 miles of the 400-plus mile Rt. 6 corridor through Pennsylvania. A portion of the highway in all 11 counties was cleaned by students, businesses and service organizations.

THEFTS, BREAK-INS INVESTIGATED
      Numerous tools stolen Thieves made off with a variety of valuable tools from a business along Rt. 6, just west of Coudersport Borough. State police from Denton Hill were summoned to Street Machines Auto Care Thursday morning after the owners discovered the burglary, which occurred some after 8:15 the previous night.

      A top-notch national bluegrass band, Larry Keel and Natural Bridge, has been inked to perform at the seventh annual Dam Show, set for July 24-25 at the Austin Dam Memorial Park. The band is headquartered in Natural Bridge, Va., in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountain bluegrass country.
