COWBURN WINS OPENER AT STATE TOURNAMENT

      Austin faces a tough challenge in the opening round of the girls' basketball state tournament. Coach Dick Logue's Panthers (22-4) travel to Gateway High School in Monroeville on Saturday to meet Pittsburgh North Catholic (21-5). The game tips off at noon.

FALCON GIRLS BEGIN STATE PLAYOFFS TODAY IN ST. MARYS
      Coudersport returns to the girls' basketball state tournament on Saturday, hoping to move into "Sweet 16" round. Coach Brian Green's Falcons (22-3) open against the Southern Fulton Indians, also 22-3, at St. Marys Public High School, with tip-off at 3 pm. Saturday's winner plays again on Wednesday against the survivor of the Austin vs. North Catholic game.

FALCONS 8-1 IN JR HIGH HOOPS
      Coudersport rebounded from its first boys' junior high basketball defeat of the season with a 34-26 win over visiting Northern Potter on Wednesday. John Michael Rigas scored 10 points, while Caden Whitman and Ryan Counts added six each for the Falcons (8-1).

12 STRAIGHT: FOSTER PERFECT AT MOUNTAIN VIEW LANES
      Smart money on anyone bowling a perfect game at Mountain View Bowling Center has been on veteran kegler Bob Foster for some time now. The affable Foster recently achieved the ultimate for the first time in his stellar career, spilling 12 straight strikes for a 300 perfecto. He has come close, but has never done it before.

BAKER ELIMINATED AT SHARON
      Cameron County High School senior Mike Baker gave it a shot, but came up short at last weekend's PIAA Northwest Regional Tournament in Sharon. Baker, just back from knee surgery and decidedly rusty, qualified for the tournament with a gutsy performance during the District 9 finals at Clarion.

Bova brothers wrestling champs
      Two brothers from Coudersport closed out the junior high wrestling season as PIAA District 9 champions. Kyle Bova won the 90-pound championship and finished the season with a 26-1 record. Cody Bova was the 95-pound champion and closed at 25-3.

Purcell Memorial Tournament Slated
      A three-on-three basketball tournament will be held in Emporium on Saturday, March 28. Cameron County Boys' Hoop Club is sponsoring the Chris Purcell Memorial at the high school gym. Cost is $40 per four-member team. Registration deadline is March 23. Male and female divisions have been established as follows: grades 5-6, grades 7-8, grades 9-11, and open division.

Youth baseball sign-ups scheduled next week
      Coudersport Service Club is once again sponsoring youth baseball and softball programs, with registration scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the elementary school, from 6-8 pm. All children ages six through 15 as of April 30 are eligible. There is a fee of $20 per child or $35 per family.
