A special morning on the trout stream
      The morning was breaking as the boy approached his favorite trout stream. It was June and that meant summer vacation, freedom, and fishing. There was a freshness in the air. Steam-like fog rose lazily from the stream surface. A heavy cloud hung over the valley, covering verdant green landscape with a gray hue.

Electronic license sales nearing
      The Game Commission is ready to trot out its heralded electronic "point-of-sale" hunting license system following the Pa. House of Representatives passage of House Bill 92. PGC Executive Director Carl Roe said he hopes for Senate passage of HB 92 so the agency can move forward.

     Few birds signal the coming of spring as early as the common merganser. Also known as a goosander, this duck shows up on southern Potter and Cameron County waters as early as February, after spending the winter further south where they can find open lakes and ponds. They always travel in pairs. The male has a bright green head, while the female's head is brown. New birds find temporary home in Pennsylvania
      There's a new bird in northcentral Pennsylvania -- the pine siskin. Joe Kosack, a wildlife educator with the Pa. Game Commission, said birds look like a house finch, but are smaller.

Deadline nears for bonus spring gobbler tags
      Pennsylvania hunters are able to kill a second spring gobbler again this year if they buy a special tag from the Game Commission. Applications are available in the hunting digest or at the Game Commission website at pgc.state.pa.us.

Pine, Kettle creeks next up for trout stocking
      Thousands of brook, brown and rainbow trout, including some trophy-sized specimens from area hatcheries, are being deposited in area waterways in preparation for the 2009 trout fishing season. Trout fishing season gets underway on Saturday, April 18.

Calling contest today!
      Plans are falling into place for the annual Kettle Creek Outdoor Show, to be held on Saturday in Cross Fork. The event includes a return of the Potter County Turkey Calling Contest, which was a major attraction in the region for many years. That contest, which starts at 11 am, will feature prizes in open, amateur, friction and youth divisions.

      Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Association heard a critique of the Pa. Game Commission's deer management program from Steve Moore, president of the Unified Sportsmen of Pa. Also addressing club members was Bill Crisp, local conservation officer for the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission.

Gun show planned April 4-5
      Black Forest Conservation Association will hold its annual Spring Gun Show on Saturday and Sunday, April 4-5, at the Roulette Firehall. Hours are 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday and 8 am to 2 pm on Sunday. Table reservations are available by contacting the chairman, Bill Sallade, at 274-9087.

Trail assn. meeting, hike set April 24-26
      Keystone Trails Association is hosting its spring meeting and hiking weekend April 24-26 in Potter County. A variety of guided hikes, ranging from easy to strenuous, will be offered along the Susquehannock Trail, according to Curt Ashenfelter, executive director of KTA.

      Potter County native George Daniel, head coach of the U.S. Fly Fishing Team, will share pointers on successful fishing techniques on Tuesday during a seminar at St. Marys Area Middle School. Trout Unlimited is sponsoring the free program at 7 pm.
