      Betty Wei and Dr. Celso Backes display a photo of the barn at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital taken by Dr. Saeed Akbari, a longtime urologist at Cole, who recently donated a series of his photos to the hospital. The medical staff donated funds to have all the photos framed and matted. They will be displayed in the Irwin Medical Arts Center.

Time to register kids at Austin
      Austin Area School will hold kindergarten and preschool registration later this month. Kindergarten signup runs from 8 am to 2:30 pm on Friday, April 17. Children must be five years old by Sept. 1. All new kindergarten students must register, including those who were in the preschool program. Parents should bring immunization records and birth certificate.

Pizza maker in Italy competing for team USA
      Emporium's Dave Smith, owner of Pizza Palace Plus, is among members of the 2009 U.S. Pizza Team who left last week for Salsomaggiore, Italy, to compete in the 18th annual World Pizza Championship. Team members are vying in the largest dough stretch, fastest pizza maker, free-style dough-tossing and culinary competitions. More than 30 countries are represented.

Train may have been cause of another wildfire
      A wildfire apparently touched off by sparks from a passing freight train sent volunteers from four fire departments into action last Thursday evening. The flames spread through the forest floor off Gardeau Road in Norwich Township, McKean County, not far from the site of the June 2006 Norfolk Southern train derailment and lye spill.

      Cameron County High School Guidance Office has received an updated application for the Howard Mayberry Memorial Scholarship, John Schwab Educational Fund Scholarship, and Guy S. and Mary L. Felt Education Fund Scholarship. Anyone who picked up an application before March 5 is asked to obtain an updated application.

Austin man seriously injured in cycle crash
      An Austin man was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident late Sunday afternoon on Route 872 near Portage Road in Potter County. State police from Denton Hill say that 37- year-old Steven "Bill" Brewer Jr., 37, lost control of his 2000 Yamaha cycle on a curve while northbound and struck a guiderail.

Sylvan Heritage Council plans 'Clean Up Emporium'
      Sylvan Heritage Council has announced plans for its third annual Clean Up Emporium Day on Saturday, April 25. Groups and individuals are asked to join in the effort, in conjunction with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day. PennDOT will supply safety vests, work gloves and garbage bags.

Gods' Country Marathon' set for June 6
      The 35th running of the God's Country Marathon will take place on Saturday, June 6. Ranked as one of the "Top Ten Toughest Marathons" by readers of Runners World magazine, the 26.2-mile course has traditionally attracted around 200 runners.

DEP fines company for polluting
      State officials have fined Veolia ES Solid Waste of Pa. Inc. of Brockway more than $11,200 for residual and municipal waste violations last fall in Cameron and Centre counties. Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) inspectors responded to a complaint at GKN Sinter Metals in Emporium last November.
