RECORD REGISTRATION AT 'CANOE CLASSIC'
      A record number of paddlers turned out for the 2009 Cameron County Canoe & Kayak Classic, held last Saturday on the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning River. The 182 paddlers who registered for the race was an event record and came as a surprise to event organizers who thought the 30-degree temperatures and 40 mile an hour wind gusts would keep some people at home.

Francis Carpenter and Jerry Foster, both of Mountain Hollow Game Calls, and Frank Sutliff of Top Calls (left to right), demonstrated new calling techniques and products and took questions from visitors.

PGC to meet, consider deer seasons
      With controversy raging over the size of the deer herd in northcentral Pennsylvania, all eyes will be on the Pa. Game Commission during the agency's April 20-21 meeting in Harrisburg. Tourist-based business owners and a large proportion of deer hunters think the Game Commission has gone too far in cutting the deer population by issuing too many doe licenses.

Area outlook very good for gobbler season
      Spring gobbler hunting season kicks off across Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 18, with the special one-day "mentored youth turkey hunt." The regular season opens for all other hunters on Saturday, April 25. Wildlife conservation officers from the Pa. Game Commission are forecasting an excellent season.

Kids only fishing on Salt Run again
      Salt Run in Cameron County, from the Rt. 155 bridge upstream for about one-half mile, will be designated as a Kids' Fishing Area again this trout season, open only to children 12 and younger. Daily creel limit will be three fish.
