Forest tent caterpillars are making themselves at home in certain tree species across the region. They defoliated almost twice as many acres last year as they did in 2007, and early trends suggest another bad year. This pest is a native species that especially likes landscape trees. To remove these tents, grab a stick and twist the tent onto it or use a gloved hand and scoop the tent. Next, just rub your gloved hands together or step on the stick and the small caterpillars will perish. Better do it quick, though, because the worms time their exit from the tent to match the time when the leaves are full grown, which is any day now.
