Lots to do this holiday weekend
      There's no need to travel far to enjoy Independence Day Weekend.      Emporium Rotary Club donated $370 to the Cameron County Food Pantry and pledged to continue collecting donations for the organization. Past President Sue Bucher made the presentation to Pastor Gary Atkinson. Incoming Rotary President Connie Garrigan announced that, due to the slumping local economy, Emporium Rotary will continue collecting money for the food pantry.

'HABITAT' BREAKS GROUND JULY 11
      A groundbreaking ceremony and reception will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, July 11, at the site where a new Potter County Habitat for Humanity home will be built in Roulette. It's at the corner of Pfeiffer and Main streets. A chicken barbecue will be held at the Roulette Firehall in conjunction with the event.

'Ag Progress' tour July 16
      Potter County's 23rd annual "Progress Through Communications Tour for Agriculture," scheduled for Thursday, July 16, will bring together members of the area's agricultural community with local and state leaders to promote a better understanding of issues facing today's farmers.

Allegheny River plan open to public input
      Allegheny River Headwaters Conservation Plan is moving forward, engaging business people, government officials and other citizens. Mission of the project, carried out by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, is to protect the Allegheny River's unique land, water, biological and cultural resources while encouraging recreation, environmental education, arts and culture.

Strawberry fest Saturday
      A Strawberry Festival, sponsored by the New Century Club, will be held on Saturday at the courthouse square in Coudersport. Serving begins around 11 am and continues until approximately 2 pm. Club members will serve up strawberry shortcake and strawberry sundaes.

     A freak traffic mishap in Emporium resulted in injuries to a local resident. Leslie Franceus was taken to Elk Regional Medical Center for observation after complaining of hip and shoulder pain resulting from her hasty dive into the back seat of her car to avoid being struck by another vehicle. Police said Angie Major was eastbound at a slow rate of speed when she dropped a beverage cup. As she reached to catch the cup, she lost control of her car and it struck the side of vehicle owned by Mathew Ryan of Emporium, and then struck an open door of Franceus's car. The victim told police she was outside the vehicle, reaching in to retrieve an item, when she saw the Major vehicle heading toward her and jumped into the seat.

      25 Ford Motor Company recently honored Kightlinger Motor Company of Coudersport for 25 years of service as a Ford dealer. The Kightlingers came to Coudersport from the Meadville area in the late 1970s and acquired the former Robbins Chevrolet at Mill and East Second streets in Coudersport.

Rotary District Gov. coming Monday
      District Governor Joe White will attend the July 6 meeting of Coudersport Rotary. All Rotarians are urged to attend the session, which begins at noon Monday at the Laurelwood Inn. A board of directors meeting will take place one hour prior to the noon meeting.

State troopers investigate burglary
      Gun stolen from camp State police from Denton Hill continue their investigation of a burglary that occurred sometime between May 25 and last weekend at a seasonal residence on East Fork Road, one-half mile west of the Marvin Run Camp Ground in Wharton Township.

GUNZBURGER BUILDING DEDICATION, OPEN HOUSE JULY 10
      County officials past and present, community leaders and others will gather on Friday, July 10, for a dedication ceremony of the F. W. Gunzburger County Office Building. The public is encouraged to attend. Following a brief program at 1 pm, an open house will be held to allow the public to tour the building at the corner of Main and Water streets in Coudersport.

BUILDING'S HISTORY LONG, STORIED
      What is now referred to as the F. W. Gunzburger County Office Building at the corner of Main and Water streets served for several decades as a center of education in the county seat. The 57,000 square foot building actually has its roots in two separate schools that occupied the same lot in the early 1900s.

Pornography charges against Coudersport man bound over
      James P. Steiner, 41, of Coudersport was bound to court on charges of possessing child pornography and criminal use of a communications facility, following a preliminary hearing Tuesday before District Judge Annette Easton.

      Another successful Northern Tier Camp Cadet was held last week at Mansfi eld University, where more than sixty 12- and 13-year-old boys and girls from Potter, Cameron and Tioga counties came away with heightened respect and discipline, along with a great appreciation of teamwork and law enforcement.

     Seven members of the recently-formed First Fork Fishing Club gathered for a work bee at the Potter County Angler's Club Sunday. The crew trimmed the grass and weeds around the fish hatchery's ponds. The club meets monthly at the Endeavor News office in Austin. Goal of the group is to help provide sound stewardship to the First Fork River of the Sinnemahoning River and to cultivate angling in young people. Still time for input on trail plan
      Turnout appeared low for Monday's teleconference on the 2009-2013 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Plan conducted by staff of the Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources. Northcentral Pennsylvania officials who did attend were fairly unanimous in their concern that the region may be under-represented in the plan, at least concerning recreational trails.

Austin police busy over the weekend
      Two incidents of underage drinking were investigated by Austin Borough Police last weekend. On Saturday night, police were summoned after a juvenile fled from his parents and was later located in the borough. The youth was charged with underage drinking and disorderly conduct. The investigation is continuing.

Still time to apply for fire grants
      Fire departments have a small window of opportunity to benefit from a provision of the federal economic stimulus legislation. Potter County Department of Emergency Services reports that the deadline to apply for funds to build new fire stations or improve existing facilities is Friday, July 10. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis by the U.S. Dept.

Art fest, fireworks this weekend
      Emporium will be a busy place on Independence Day, with the annual Arts Fest continuing during the day and a fireworks display at night. Cameron County Arts sponsors the festival, which features artists and craftsmen who display, demonstrate and sell their work on Broad Street.

     Employees of GE Transportation (Emporium) and members of IUE/CWA Local 88607 were out in full force for their 2009 Community Awareness Project, a cooperative effort building a new recreational complex at the South Park Playground. The GE team was also assisted by members of the Cameron County Recreation Board and by the Cameron County Probation Department. There were approximately 30 sets of hands in all, digging holes, setting posts, and assembling the play area. The project was 90 percent completed in just under five hours. Lunch was provided by the Recreation Board, and the playground should be ready for the kids any day now. Emporium Foundation provided financial assistance.

Family Caregiver Picnic planned in August
      Potter County Human Services, Area Agency on Aging (PCAAA) will host the annual Family Caregiver Picnic on Tuesday, August 11, at 11 am at the pavilion at Coudersport Area Recreation Park (CARP). The picnic is intended to provide some much-needed rest and relaxation for those caring for older relatives or friends.

Mercantile plan moving ahead
      Copies of a prospectus outlining financial objectives for the Coudersport Mercantile project are now available at Hauber's Jewelers and the Maple Tree On Main Restaurant. Under the plan, a clothing store would be located at the former JCPenney store in downtown Coudersport, owned by stockholders who purchase the $500 shares and operated by a board of directors.

      Next weekend will be a busy one at Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron and Potter counties. Seats are still open for the Birds 'n Brunch pontoon excursion on the lake at the George B. Stevenson Dam, set for Saturday, July 11, from 9-10:30 am.

Relay For Life nets $64,000
      Rain threatened, but in the end the weather cooperated and never managed more than a sprinkle or two in the 16th annual Potter County Relay for Life. With roughly 300 participating, this year's event, held at Strawberry Field on the Cole Memorial Hospital complex, raised nearly $64,000.

Important watershed meeting Tues
      A public meeting on remediation work in Sterling Run will be held at 6:30 pm Tuesday at the Cameron County Courthouse, hosted by Bucktail Watershed Association. Mike Smith from the Pa. Dept. of Environmental Protection will review restoration work taking place on Finley Run and plans for more work at both Portable Run and other sections of Finley Run.

     In a surprise ceremony during Thursday's meeting of the Potter County Commissioners, Kathy Brooks (center) was honored for 25 years of service as Potter County Emergency Management Agency Administrative Assistant. Brooks, a resident of Austin, has served the agency since April 1984. Fern Harmon (left), director of Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency's Central Region, along with John Hetrick, director of the county's Dept. of Emergency Services, presented Brooks with a plaque recognizing her "hard work, diligence, dedication and professionalism" in providing excellent administrative support to agencies, municipal coordinators, organizations and PEMA. She was also honored for "knowing what to do when the need arose."

     Two recipients of Emporium Rotary Club's annual college scholarships attended a recent meeting to update members on their academic process. Kelly Songer (left), the 2006 recipient, and 2009 scholarship winner Chelsey Morrison were guests of the club. Kelly will be a senior at Penn State in the fall and is considering enrolling in law school. Chelsey is also bound for Penn State, where she plans to major in a medical field. Club members also received a letter of thanks from the 2007 scholarship recipient, Erica Stewart. The club agreed to host an exchange student from Germany.
