'HABITAT' BREAKS GROUND JULY 11 A groundbreaking ceremony and reception will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, July 11, at the site where a new Potter County Habitat for Humanity home will be built in Roulette. It's at the corner of Pfeiffer and Main streets. A chicken barbecue will be held at the Roulette Firehall in conjunction with the event. The property was donated by the family of the late T. Lee Bennett, a retired schoolteacher and pastor who was instrumental in the founding and early operation of the Potter County Habitat for Humanity. The organization will construct a home on the Bennett lot for the Betty (Jankowski) Shalkowski family of Roulette. Habitat has also received a donation to enable construction of a home in Galeton. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofi t, ecumenical Christian ministry committed to reducing poverty and homelessness and make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat builds affordable housing in partnership with low-income families. Family members, friends and community volunteers pitch in to build the homes, which are sold to the families at no profit. Monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses. Families are chosen based on need, willingness to become partners and ability to repay the loan. Individuals, church groups and organizations are invited to provide skilled or unskilled help. For more information, call Jim or Charlotte Blain at 274-0739 or e-mail to jrcmblain@aol.com. |
