Thinking fall in summertime
      I recently spent a week in southern Mexico, in mountains that were about 5,000 feet above sea level. The forests were incredibly diverse, but many of the species were the exact same temperate species we have in the eastern U.S.

Collaring calves part of Game Commission research project
      Some 21 elk calves have been captured and examined as of the end of June, part of a Pa. Game Commission research project. Twelve were marked with collars, ear tags, or both. Blood tests, weight, hoof examination, umbilical observation, and sex determinations were done on each captured newborn.

Poaching penalty hike stalls in House
      Members of the Pa. General Assembly have applied the brakes on a trend to increase fines for poaching and related wildlife violations. House Bill 97, which was strongly supported by the Game Commission, was sent back to the Game and Fisheries Committee by a 194-1 vote of the full House. Many members said the proposed fines were too high.

Game agency to hear public during meeting
      Coming off a significant meeting at which it set doe and elk license allotments, hunting seasons and other closely watched policies, the Pa. Game Commission will be holding a relatively uneventful meeting next week at its Harrisburg headquarters.

     Tanjee Werstler and her grandfather, Larry Werstler, set up for some fishing in a light rain over the weekend in Freeman Run, just south of Austin. On the 13- year-old's very first cast, a big brook trout went for her worm as she was reeling it back, just a yard or so from the bank. The 17 1/2-inch brookie fought for his freedom, but Tanjee got it up on the bank just before her line broke.

Blood-alcohol limit lower for 'HUI'
      Members of the Pa. House of Representatives last week unanimously passed legislation to lower the blood alcohol content (BAC) limit for "hunting under the influence" from 0.10 percent to 0.08 percent. House Bill 1523 would align the BAC with state laws governing operation of motor vehicles and boats.

      Final day for entries in the Wharton General Store Big Trout Contest is Sunday, July 5. Prizes will be awarded for heaviest and longest trout.

Cherry Spring park activities
      Area state parks have busy agendas for the Independence Day weekend. At 9:30 pm on Saturday, a show called "Lunar Sea Search" will be held at Cherry Springs. It will feature an up-close glimpse at the moon and a description of lunar surface features. If weather conditions are cloudy, a modified program will be held in the park pavilion.

Sportsmen plan pig roast July 25
      Austin-Costello Sportsmen's Club will hold its annual pig roast and building fund raffle on Saturday, July 25, from 1-4 pm at the clubhouse. Tickets are available from club members for $10 covering food and drawings. There will be live music and awarding of prizes throughout the afternoon.

Trap shooting being offered
      Trap shoots are being held twice weekly at the Black Forest Conservation Association range on Back Road, off Rt. 872, between Coudersport and Austin. New equipment has been installed, including a voice-activated launching system. The range is open to everyone from beginners to veteran shooters Sundays at 1 pm and Tuesday's at 6 pm.
