Meeting to focus on Earned Income Tax restructuring
      All township and borough officials are encouraged to join school district leaders and the Potter County Commissioners for an important meeting to be held on Thursday, July 23, starting at 6:30 pm. Primary focus will be the restructuring of Earned Income Tax (EIT) collection procedures for municipalities and school districts, as required by state law.

Meth lab awareness training July 29
      Rural areas are frequently targeted for the manufacture of methamphetamine, an illicit, harmful and addictive street drug that remains popular because of its ready availability and low cost. "Meth labs" have been uncovered in Gold, Westfield, Emporium and many other area communities over the years.

Austin board awards paving contract
      Members of the Austin Area Board of Education held a brief meeting last month to close out end-of-year business. Board members had already taken care of their more weighty business, such as next year's operating budget, tax rate and administrative salaries, in time for the launch of the 2009-10 school year on July 1.

Survival at stake for 'Camp Cadet'
      Northern Tier Camp Cadet, which instills discipline, respect and an appreciation of public service to dozens of area young people, is fighting for survival. A combination of circumstances has threatened the continued operation of Camp Cadet, although fervent supporters such as Potter County's Robin Freeman are determined to overcome the obstacles.

Man faces 30 years in prison following guilty plea
      A Potter County man accused of repeated incidents of rape involving two female children over a period of several years faces a prison sentence of at least 30 years following a guilty plea last week. David Thomas, 47, of Coudersport avoided trial with guilty pleas to three separate felonies.

Geothermal energy to be highlighted
      A program on geothermal energy will highlight the annual Cameron County Penn State Cooperative Extension picnic on Wednesday, July 22, at Sizerville State Park. Dinner will be served at 6. Jim Ladlee of Clinton County will discuss his experiences with installing geothermal energy heating and cooling systems in his home.

Dems to meet Tuesday
      A meeting of the Potter County Democratic Committee will be held on Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Coudersport Public Library. All Democrats and others interested in party activities are welcome to attend. Committee members will be preparing for the Municipal Election of Nov. 3.

Coudersport Rotary hosts Dist. Governor
      Coudersport was first on the list of 2009-2010 official visits by Rotary District Governor Joe White of Clearfield. White attended Monday's meeting of the Coudersport Rotary, presenting a banner to new club president Marcia Lagrua-Jones before he outlined some of the organization's goals.

      12.3 Independence Day weekend saw 37.1 million Americans traveling 50 miles or more. That figure was down by 12.3 percent from last year. Two-thirds of Americans surveyed said they will be cutting back on the amount they spend on vacations this year, even though gas prices are $1.45 lower per gallon than they were in July 2008.

Library upgrades kid's area
      Renovations have been made to the children's section of the Coudersport Public Library, making the facility more appealing to the younger set. Library Director Darlene Peasley, who died unexpectedly earlier this year, secured two grants to improve the children's section by addressing the needs of preschool-aged children.

DAM SHOW MUSIC FESTIVAL JULY 24-25
      One of the region's most eclectic and fastest-growing music festivals, the Dam Show, returns to Austin Dam Memorial Park for its seventh running over the July 24-25 weekend. The show's organizers have lined up a variety of national recording artists and regional favorites for this popular celebration of music, art, colorful lights and summer fun.

School tax bills coming; upset sale planned Sept. 14
      It won't be long until real estate tax notices from local school districts will be on their way to Potter County property owners. Most area districts did not raise taxes to fund their 2009-10 operating budgets. Property owners who pay their taxes by a September deadline receive a two-percent discount.

Mountain Thyme Herbal Fair July 18-19
      This month's Fourth Annual Mountain Thyme Herbal Fair promises to be the biggest and best yet. Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 18-19, at Cherry Springs State Park, the fair showcases vendors of herbal, gardening and nature art items. There is no admission fee.

Prayer sessions Monday
      A prayer and worship service is being held at 8 pm each Monday through the summer at the mini-park on Fourth and Chestnut streets in Emporium. The session includes prayers for county, local, state and national governments, as well as several social justice issues. Other requests are welcome. Leaking fuel tanks to get a look
      Three underground storage tanks that pose environmental risks in Potter County may be removed under a plan unveiled by the state last week. Pennsylvania is trying to tap into the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for $6.1 million to help pay for removal of 71 leaking underground storage tanks in 40 counties.

The annual event, held on the Courthouse Square in Coudersport, is a favorite with local residents and visitors. Proceeds benefit New Century Club community projects; the club's current major effort is repair of the gazebo bandstand on the square.

      Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will offer heel screenings from 1-3 pm on Friday, July 17, at the hospital's Irwin Medical Arts Center. Cost is $10. Call 274- 8200 for an appointment. Heel screenings give patients a preliminary bone density score that may indicate the need for a more thorough exam.

      Professional photographer Curt Weinhold of Coudersport, who specializes in nature photography and portraits, will present photography workshops on two separate dates at the Hemlock Springs Historic Crafts and Cultural Arts Center in Keating Summit. Sessions are set for 9:30 am to 2 pm on July 18 and Sept. 26. Cost is $25. Registration is required.

Donor challenge
      Elk-Cameron Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross has launched the Summer Scholarship Challenge to all graduating seniors, underclassmen, faculty, school staff, alumni, and the general public from all area schools. The school with the highest percentage of blood donors during June and August will receive a $500 scholarship.

Drug charges filed against area teen
      A Coudersport teenager faces criminal charges for allegedly providing methadone and Oxycodone to another teen last month. Cody Yentzer, 19, was arraigned before District Judge Annette Easton on drug charges and separate counts of giving false reports to police and reckless endangerment.

      Educators, elected officials, police officers, volunteers and other individuals have an opportunity to learn how they can be more effective in dealing with "generational poverty" during a workshop being held on Aug. 12 in Coudersport.

      A grant of nearly $300,000 from the State Education Department will support literacy in the Oswayo Valley, Austin, Galeton and Northern Potter school districts.

     Austin Borough is getting a helping hand with its maintenance responsibilities this summer. Eddie Hostetlar (foreground) and John Oliver are working on the borough crew as summer helpers. They have been busy mowing and trimming borough properties and helping with other odds and ends, like removing the weeds and sediment that have built up on borough sidewalks. The borough's maintenance crew has also been boosted by the arrival of another full-time maintenance man. Kurt Logue finished his first full week with the borough Friday. Other borough workers include Herm Beyer, Dick Wold and Daleen Sinnamond. Kyle Day is the town's full-time police officer.

Rabies clinics start this weekend
      Penn State Cooperative Extension will sponsor rabies clinics in Potter County. Cost is $5.00 per animal. Dr. Ronnie Schenkein from Coudersport Animal Health Center will administer the vaccine. Clinics will be held from 1-4 pm on July 11 at the Roulette Firehall, July 25 at the Austin Firehall, Aug. 15 at the John Collins Park in Galeton, Sept.
