      It all happened so fast. I was traveling along a back road south of the Bradford Regional Airport, passing through a heavy section of woodland bordered by a large swamp, when a long, fairly skinny animal shot across the road about 60 feet in front of me.

'Doe' license applications accepted on Monday
      A new era in antlerless deer license sales will dawn on Monday and the Pa. Game Commission and county treasurers say they're ready. Treasurers will begin accepting applications - through the mail only - - three weeks earlier than in past years: starting Monday, July 13, from Pennsylvania residents.

DMAP opportunities on state forest land
      Deer hunters will find greater hunting opportunities in some state forest areas through an arrangement between forest managers and the Pa Game Commission. The Forestry Bureau is once again participating in the deer management assistance program (DMAP), which allows landowners to bring in additional antlerless deer hunters.

Local grants up for approval during Fish Commission July meeting
      Three grants for area conservation projects are on the agenda for approval at next week's meeting of the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission. Grants are targeted as part of the Sinnemahoning Creek watershed restoration program in Cameron, McKean, Elk and Potter counties.

Lots to do this weekend at Sinnemahoning Park
      This will be a busy weekend at Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron and Potter counties. Seats are still open for the Birds 'n Brunch pontoon excursion on the lake at the George B. Stevenson Dam, set for Saturday from 9-10:30 am.

Predator program today
      Austin-Costello Sportsmen's Club will hold its annual pig roast and building fund raffle on Saturday, July 25, from 1-4 pm at the clubhouse. Tickets are available from club members for $10 covering food and drawings. There will be live music and awarding of prizes throughout the afternoon.

Sportsmen plan Youth Field Day
      Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Association members heard updates on the successful Snake Hunt and Youth Fishing Derby and thanked all of the people who played a part. Next big event is Youth Field Day, scheduled for Aug. 8, with registrations from 9-10 am. Donations of items for door prizes would be appreciated.

Park to offer water, space programs
      Two state parks in Potter County have activities planned for Saturday (today). Lyman Run State Park will present a water safety program at 4 pm. Educators from the park staff and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will join Buddy Beaver, the water safety mascot, for a discussion and demonstration on life jackets and other safety topics.

12 charged with selling Pa reptiles
      An 18-month investigation by the Fish and Boat Commission resulted in a dozen individuals from three states being charged with illegally selling and possessing native reptiles. Officers posed as reptile collectors to gather evidence against the defendants from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Registration due for family fishing program
      The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Sinnemahoning State Park are sponsoring a free, educational Family Fly Fishing Program for families on Saturday July 18 and Saturday, Aug. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. Program is open to families with children ages 8 and older. A parent or guardian must accompany all children to this event.

Free trees for parks through 'Plant A Tree' program
      Pennsylvania residents are encouraged to participate in the Plant A Tree program, which supplies free trees to state parks. All it requires is a visit to a website, parkvisitor.com/ odwalla, at which internet users designate which parks should receive trees. No contribution or registration is required.

Predator program today
      Sizerville State Park will hold two nature programs on Saturday (today). At 3 pm, "Predators of Pennsylvania" will focus on how species have adapted to hunt prey. The program will include an interactive game. It will be held at the Environmental Building, across from the park office.

Roulette Fish & Game Club derby today
      Roulette Fish and Game Club will hold a kids' fishing derby and pig roast on Saturday (today) at the Scott Buchsen farm on the West Branch of Fishing Creek Road in Roulette. Boys and girls 14 and younger are welcome to participate in the derby from 10 am to 1 pm.
