DMAP opportunities on state forest land

Deer hunters will find greater hunting opportunities in some state forest areas through an arrangement between forest managers and the Pa Game Commission.

The Forestry Bureau is once again participating in the deer management assistance program (DMAP), which allows landowners to bring in additional antlerless deer hunters. Some 917,008 acres of land are enrolled in DMAP program for 2009. The strategy again takes into account the shortened antlerless deer season in Wildlife Management Units (WMU) 2G, 2D and 4B.

Area 2G includes all of Cameron County and those portions of Potter and McKean counties south of Rt. 6.

"By harvesting additional antlerless deer, hunters help balance the deer population with available habitat, and promote healthy forests and healthy deer while enjoying quality hunting experiences," said John Quigley, acting secretary of the Pa. Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Hunters this year will obtain their permits directly from license issuing agents or the Game Commission website, pgc.state.pa.us.
