Teen completes Gold Award requirements
      Sarah Hutcheson, a senior at Coudersport High School, has completed the public service hours to earn the Gold Award - the highest honor in Girl Scouting. The 17-year-old has worked at rabies clinics sponsored annually by Dr. Ronnie Schenkein and the Potter County 4-H program to aid her career goal of becoming a veterinarian.

      Potter County's Man to Man prostate cancer support group will host a special meeting on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 pm at the Mill Stream Inn in Coudersport. An American Cancer Society research study team will be sitting in on the meeting.

Library advocates hope others will follow Ulysses woman's lead in supporting libraries
      Local library supporters are hoping that people will follow the lead of a Ulysses woman who decided to leave a portion of her estate to her local library. Ulysses Library Association and the Ulysses United Methodist Church held a ceremony Saturday in honor of long-time educator Ruth R. Agar, who died last year and left a substantial sum to both organizations.

     More than 2,300 people filled Brandon Park in Williamsport last Saturday for the Northcentral Pennsylvania Tea Party. The non-partisan demonstration was called to send a message to elected officials that they must be accountable to the people, respectful of the U.S. Constitution, and resolved to stem the tide of rising taxes. Former Potter County resident Roger Leight, one of the coordinators, applauded the elected officials who accepted the invitation to hear the message. Among those introduced to the audience were State Senator Eugene Yaw, Williamsport Mayor Gabriel Campana, County Commissioners Jeff Wheeland (Lycoming) and Paul Heimel (Potter), as well as a representative of Congressman Glenn Thompson.

Plaintiffs will appeal 911 center ruling
      Weeks after Commonwealth Court rejected a suit filed by three couples who objected to the new Potter County emergency services center being built near their homes in the Maple View area, east of Coudersport, the plaintiffs have decided to appeal.

State police: man was growing marijuana, neglecting animals
      Facing multiple charges Drug charges and animal neglect counts have been filed against a Potter County man after a raid at his home on Cobb Hill Road, south of Ulysses. State police from Denton Hill report that they found marijuana plants and drug paraphernalia at the home of 55-year-old Gary W. Wright.

     The Miles family set up a mini farmer's market in Austin Monday as part of the Austin Senior Luncheon Program. Paul Perry was among those who stopped to buy fresh produce. Derrick and Brenda Miles, as well as Angela Miles Reese, manned the table. The mini market drew plenty of customers and organizers say they hope to do it again.

'Fill A Backpack' project continues
      When school classes resumed last week after the summer recess, some 367 students across the region arrived with new backpacks, thanks to the local To Fill A Backpack charity. Donations received in August swelled the fund to more than $4,600, helping the organization meet backpack needs for underprivileged students in nine area school districts.

Last year South Park added a "country gift" section to the hardware store, which is located on Third Street in Emporium Borough; the gift area quickly outgrew the space the family had planned for it, necessitating the move to 541 East Allegheny Avenue, the former site of GTC Computers, across from Kwik Fill. A Grand Opening was held Thursday. Refreshments were served and gift drawings were held. Convicted grave robber plans to appeal
      A man convicted last week of breaking into a mausoleum in northern Potter County and rummaging through caskets to steal jewelry plans to appeal. Adam P. Johnson, 26, of North Bingham is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 30. He was convicted after a two-day jury trial of breaking into the Kibbe family mausoleum in the Whites Corners Cemetery.

     Cameron County Chamber of Commerce is preparing to celebrate the county's sesquicentennial next year. The observance will kick off on March 29, marking the 150th anniversary of the day Cameron County was carved out of neighboring counties and chartered by the commonwealth. Special events will include a parade, fireworks, flower show recognizing the Emporium Garden Club's 50th birthday, and more. Gardening course nearing
      Penn State Cooperative Extension will conduct a master gardener course starting next week. In exchange for training, master gardeners serve as volunteers for horticulture programs.       An article in last week's edition reported that Coudersport Borough Council has suggested that the town pool area be turned into basketball and tennis courts. While council members are considering such recreation facilities as an alternative to the pool, discussion centered on locating the courts on borough property near Pine, Cherry and Vine streets.
