The cool, crisp weather of September is upon us. Our starry nights, cold mornings with fog that hangs in the valley until 10 o'clock, and gorgeous sunny afternoons are nothing less than a gift from God. There are a multitude of changes going on in our woods. More ... About 10 members of the recently-formed First Fork Fishing Club held a work bee at the Potter County Angler's Club Sunday. The group gave the grounds a final trimming for the year and also put away stocking equipment for the season. At the end of the session, club members stocked roughly 100 trout in section 1 of the First Fork. Momentum is building for of the biggest ATV gatherings in the region, set for Saturday, Sept. 12, at Potato City Country Inn. It's the second annual ATV Jamboree and Scavenger Hunt. Participants in the scavenger hunt can register any time between 8 am and noon. More ... Applicants for the coveted Pennsylvania elk hunting and bobcat hunting/trapping licenses will be able to log onto the internet and find out if they've had their names drawn. The Pa. Game Commission will select license recipients on Friday. Winners' names will appear on the agency's website, pgc. state.pa.us. More ... Almost two dozen sportsmen's clubs throughout Pennsylvania are hosting junior pheasant hunts. The clubs will share in about 1,800 pheasants provided by the Pa. Game Commission. "The state's long-standing twopheasant daily bag limit will apply to junior hunters participating in the season. More ... Austin-Costello Sportsmen's Club will host a tagged trout tournament on Sept. 19. Registration will open at 6 am and fishing will be permitted from 8 to noon. A $10 entry fee is required. Twenty tagged trout will be stocked. Cash prizes will be based on the number of entrants. More ... A 90-minute pontoon excursion on the lake of the George B. Stevenson Dam at Sinnemahoning State Park, complete with a packed brunch, will be held from 9 am Saturday, Sept. 12. Park staff will lead the tour to find herons, mergansers, kingfishers, and other birds that frequent the area. More ... Fall webworms are back. District Forester Jeanne Wambaugh from the Emporium office reports that the larval stage of the moth creates a web, mainly on the ends of the branches, and the insects feed on the leaves. After about a month, the lavea pupate and overwinter at the base of trees. More ... Educational programs on native wildlife are scheduled this weekend at Sizerville State Park. On Saturday, a program on owls will be held at 3 pm, followed at 7 by "Monster Whitetails of Northern Pennsylvania," including a view of large deer taken in northern Pennsylvania and information on deer biology, antler growth and habitat management. More ... Sinnemahoning State Park is offering guided elk watches on weekends, beginning Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12, at 5 pm. Starting from the park office, the program begins with a discussion on elk, followed by a trip into the elk range to observe the species during the rut. More ... Free evening programs this weekend at Cherry Springs State Park will allow the public to learn more about astronomy. At 9 pm both Saturday and Sunday, the park will offer a Lunar Sea Search program, with a history lesson about the moon and telescope viewing available. More ... Pennsylvania residents are encouraged to participate in the Plant A Tree program, which supplies free trees to state parks. All it requires is a visit to a website, parkvisitor.com/odwalla, at which internet users designate which parks should receive trees. No contribution or registration is required. More ...
