September Encounters
      In two weeks, it will be archery season and the landscape will be ablaze with brilliant fall foliage. One thing that has really stood out for me this month is the heavy red oak acorn crop. Normally, red oak acorns drop during the second half of October and the beginning of November. Chestnut and white oak acorns are known to drop much earlier, in September.

No local hunters drawn for '09 elk license
      By luck of the draw, all hunters from Potter, Cameron, Elk and McKean counties hoping to be chosen for the 2009 elk hunt were shut out. A Jefferson County applicant, Andrew Emery of Brookville, was among 20 chosen for a bull elk-hunting license. William Harris of DuBois was one of 39 hunters awarded a license for an antlerless elk.

PGC pheasant stocking begins October 9
      Game Commission personnel plan to release 106,142 ringneck pheasants on public lands for the upcoming small game hunting seasons. Starting on Oct. 9, 15,000 birds will be released for the junior pheasant hunt, scheduled for Oct 10-17.
